Novoneel Chakraborty is a true storyteller. He’s written national bestselling novels that have delighted and enthralled readers, and is also a passionate screenwriter and blogger. Novoneel answered some of our questions in an interview, giving us insights into how he got into telling stories, and about his books including his recently published Marry Me, Stranger. The man himself was also kind enough to share some great tips on writing romantic thrillers; a genre he is an expert in. Read on to find out more.
Can you please tell us a bit about your background and how your interest in storytelling came about?
Academically speaking I have a business administration background but to this day I have no clue why I chose to do it. One major reason could be I was pretty directionless right after my plus two. My interest to tell stories happened quite suddenly with no specific trigger. I was always an avid reader but it was during the second year of my college that I started to get ideas for plots and characters and I kept writing them. My grandfather and father have a strong inclination toward literature so maybe I am just an expression of their pent-up desires.
You’re a bestselling author of novels including A Thing Beyond Forever – The Reward For Every True Love Is Not Love…, That Kiss In The Rain.. : Love Is The Weather Of Life, How About A Sin Tonight? and EX:…A Twisted Love Story. Out of these stories, which gave you the most satisfaction in terms of writing, and can you please tell us why?
My personal favourite among all my works till now is ‘How About a Sin Tonight?’ To write about five different characters, each one being layered, and then to mingle them among themselves to create a wholesome story was not easy. But it was something which I enjoyed a lot while penning it. Also, I feel this book was instrumental in my growth as a writer.
Your latest novel entitled Marry Me, Stranger has recently been published. Can you please tell us about this story and how the idea to write it came about?
‘Marry Me, Stranger’ is the story of Rivanah Bannerjee who thinks she has a perfect life until she is forced to think otherwise. Since it is an edge-of-the-seat thriller I would like the readers to read the book and discover the story for themselves.
Can you please share 3 top tips with budding authors who want to write in the romantic thriller genre?
My top 3 suggestions for the above mentioned genre are:
1. Invest in the flawed side of characters so that they read as real as possible.
2. Design every chapter in a way that it should add value to the overall story else don’t keep it. Remember storytelling is how you build an attractive looking house with the minimum number of bricks possible else nobody will be hooked.
3. You should have an innate sense of what to reveal and when. Timing is very important in any subgenre of thriller writing be it romantic thriller, crime thriller or whatever.
You’ve also an avid screenwriter. Can you please tell us about any recent screenwriting projects you’ve been involved in?
I’m working on couple of television shows, one of which is scheduled to go on air soon on Channel V.
