If you’re an author looking to publish your first book, there is one organization definitely worth taking a look at. The company is called Srishti Publishers and Distributors, and happens to be one of India’s largest publishing houses. We caught up with Arup Bose of Srishti to find out more about his background in publishing, about the history of Srishti, and what the organization does in the publishing space. Arup also told us about what authors need to do to get their books published and distributed through Srishti. Read on to find out what Arup had to say.
Can you please tell us about your background and how you got into publishing?
Born and brought up in Delhi, my association with books and publishing has been since childhood. Growing up in the late 80’s, entertainment mostly meant reading books or watching Doordarshan, but a positive family environment deeply entrenched in publishing and education led to intense respect and preference for books over other media.
After working for a year as a Risk Consultant and Mitigation expert for a leading corporate house, I decided to hang up my boots and enter the world of publishing. The shift was but a logical extension of my background of both love for books and association with the industry. Suffice to say that the last two-and-a-half years have been most satisfying, both personally and professionally.
Can you please tell us about Srishti Publishers and Distributors? When did the company start, where are you based, and what is your role at Srishti?
Srishti stands for creation, and has been referred since time immemorial to the creation of the world by Brahma. Srishti Publishers was set up by our founder, Mr. J.K. Bose, after more than two decades of experience in various key leadership positions across the Indian publishing industry, in the year 1997 with the objective of creating a unique set of books that provide unmatched reading pleasure to people across the country. The core objective of our company is to provide a platform to first-time writers – young in age and at heart. In the last eighteen years, we have come a long way and have added myriad feathers to our cap.
Srishti, based out of Delhi, is now a pioneer in quality production of popular fiction. It has not only given a platform to budding, debutant authors, but has also made quality books available at affordable prices across India. Some of the current crop of bestselling authors like Preeti Shenoy, Durjoy Dutta, Ravinder Singh, Abhimanyu Jha, etc., published their first work of fiction with us that went on to become bestselling titles.
With the firm faith that everyone has a story to tell, Srishti proudly continues to give a platform to budding authors and making their stories heard to the world.
I am a part of the publishing team, which involves welcoming a new author onboard, helping him/her through the process and acting as a conduit through the whole publishing process starting from editing to production, all the way to marketing & PR of the book once it hits the stands.
What types of books does Srishti publish? What languages does Srishti publish books in?
With more than five hundred titles to boast of, Srishti specializes in publishing books in genres as diverse as Astrology, Biography, Children’s Literature, Culture, Health, Fiction, Management, Philosophy, Plays, Self-Help, Translations, among various others. The year 2015 will see Srishti’s burgeoning presence in genres as varied as romance to fantasy and mythological fiction, all the way up to satirical, political and espionage thrillers. We are currently publishing in English language only.
How can a first time author publish his/her book with Srishti? Can you please describe a typical scenario of the process involved, what a writer needs to do and how Srishti can help?
The process is quite simple and author-friendly. As a platform for publishing budding and debut authors, we welcome submissions from them. We require at the onset, a detailed synopsis of the work, any three sample chapters and the author’s bio-sketch to give us an idea about his background. The author can email us the submission at editorial@srishtipublishers.com from where on the editorial team takes up charge. Each and every proposal is individually read, evaluated and responded to. An author can expect a reply within 2-3 weeks after the submission of a typical proposal regarding our decision to take it forward or not. In case of any special requirements, we inform the author of the same.
Your organization is also a distributor. Can you please tell us a little more about your distribution, and how it can helps authors get their books out to wider audiences?
Our distribution network is one of the largest in the country. With a pan-India distribution network, we are present in all major book chains like Crossword, Landmark, Om Book Shop, Sapna Book House, Starmark, DC Books, among others; online stores like Amazon India, Flipkart, Infibeam, Homeshop18, etc.; airport and railway chain stores like MediaMart, A.H. Wheeler, etc., along with other major standalone bookstores. Our greatest strength in distribution lies in our reach in tier-II and tier-III cities, which along with our economical pricing strategy ensure that our books reach out to one of the largest and fastest growing English readership in Southeast Asia.
