We’ve been wondering what happened to Kerry Hudson since she was published and so we asked her. Here’s our review of her book 'Tony Hogan Bought Me an Ice-cream Float Before He Stole My Ma' and here’s what she had to tell us about the past year…
To say the last twelve months have been a rollercoaster would be an understatement. I went off to Vietnam to finish my second book THIRST and found out while on transit through Bangkok that I'd been shortlisted for the Guardian First Book Award. After my stint in Vietnam cycling, eating noodles and writing I returned home to find I was in the running for the Southbank Sky Arts Award for Literature up against…Will Self and Hilary Mantel (cue terror). Much to my surprise there were more shortlistings to follow, notably the Green Carnation Prize, Saltire First Book, Authors Club First Book and Polari First Novel. I taught at Cambridge's Pembroke College Summer School with the National Academy of Writing (like something out of Educating Rita) and travelled all over the place for festivals. In fact, I'm writing this in a traditional Korean house, a Hanok, while over here on a one month British Council residency to research and begin my third novel.
I can't
believe I've been so lucky and I have thanked each and every one of my lucky
stars with each good thing. And now I'm hoping that my luck will hold a little
longer as I'm finalist for the Scottish Book of the Year in the Scottish Book
Awards. The prize is a jaw-dropping £30,000 (or The Freedom to Write as I am
renaming it). After re-reading this I don't really think I deserve another good
thing but it would be churlish not to at least try…so please do vote for Tony
Hogan (https://www.scottishbookawards.com/vote/). It takes but a second and your
vote might just be the extra lucky star I need. Thank you. Kerry Hudson
We’re giving away a copy of this fantastic book. To be in with a chance of winning, please leave a comment about Scotland – maybe a memory of a visit there, or if you haven’t visited before maybe there’s somewhere you would like to go in Scotland, it's up to you.
