Being able to identify the potential bestsellers, publishing them and marketing them is the most critical job of a publication house. Those publishers that have been able to do this job successfully are the most profit making publishers.
2013 was a good year for book publishers with more than 1,000 bestselling e-books hitting the market. Listed below are those publication companies that had the biggest number of hits in this domain last year.
Penguin Random House
Penguin Random House had the most number of bestselling e-books at 478. The company was formed only on 1 July, 2013 and has already made giant strides in the e-book market. Headquartered in NYC, this publication company was formed to address the increasing demand of e-books in the global book market.
Hachette
Hachette was second in this list with 258 bestselling e-books. The prominent books published by this company include Beautiful Creatures, The Hit (David Baldacci) and 12th of Never (James Patterson). This French company was founded way back in 1826 and it has been a prominent name in the publishing industry since. Among notable news, Hachette has been engaged in a tiff with Amazon.com that started recently.
HarperCollins
Fourth in this list is HarperCollins, which gave the world 91 bestselling e-books in 2013. This American publication company is part of the “Big Six” in the publication world. The company was founded in 1989 and is one of the more prominent names to be seen in books.
Simon & Schuster
Simon & Schuster had 72 bestselling e-books in 2013 and this figure takes it to number 5 in this list. Part of the CBS Corporation, this company was founded way back in 1924. In terms of size, it is the third largest English language publisher in the world after Penguin Random House and HarperCollins.
Did you notice that number 3 got omitted from this list? As an aspiring author, you would be thrilled to know that self publication acquired the third spot in the list of top e-book publishers in 2013. There were 99 self-published bestsellers last year. There were 44 self-published bestsellers alone in the last quarter of last year.
All the top five listed here had at least one No. 1 e-book bestseller with Penguin Random House publishing 6 of them.
Where some publishers struggle to find even one bestseller during a year, these listed companies have indeed made a huge difference. This stat clearly shows that people still love books and will continue to do so, albeit the reading medium may change.
