If you’re interested in writing a contemporary romance story, then you’re in luck because Sudeep very kindly shared expert tips on how you can do so! Read on to find out what he had to say.
Hi Sudeep and welcome to e-Books India! We’re delighted to have you with us. Please tell us a bit about your background, where you come from and your work experience.
Firstly, thank you so much and I am equally delighted to talk with e-Books India. I think everyone knows Sudeep as a writer, but in the past I have completed my engineering and management studies from Mumbai. I even worked with an IT company for a year before taking up writing as full time. Currently along with writing books, I am also writing for television and a feature film too which will go on floors in early January 2015.
There’s an interesting story behind how you got into writing and became an author. Can you please tell us some more?
Of course. To be frank, I never thought of becoming an author. Writing 5 bestselling books was never ever in my mind. But yes, I used to write a diary during my college days. Though I wasn’t doing this on a daily basis, I still used to pen down memorable moments of my relationship. One fine day, my friend happened to read it, and suggested me to publish it. Rest is history. Few Things Left Unsaid topped bestseller charts everywhere in 2011 and the new book You’re The Password to My Life has already sold more than 10,000 copies before release. In the entire journey from 2011 to 2014, readers have loved the books and recommended them selflessly. All credit goes to them. Recently my name got listed in ‘Forbes Top 100 Influential Celebrities of India’ and all thanks to readers and my parents for their support.
What genres do you write in and where do you get inspiration for your writing from?
I have written 5 books and all of them are inspired from real life incidents. My writing basically focuses on relationships and portrays the true values of them. I believe everyone has a story to tell. So, I write those stories which are not only interesting but also have a positive message in it for the youth of today. For instance, my new book You’re the Password to My Life shows how friendship is the only ship that does not sink.
You’re currently one of the most successful authors in India. Did you ever think you would become this popular when you wrote your first book? Can you please tell us what it’s like to be such a renowned author?
Never. As I said, I am a writer by chance but continuing writing was my choice. I think with fame comes responsibility. Every time I write a book, I concentrate on giving my best. Rather, better than my previous work. Expectations are always high and you have to deliver it each time as readers wait for almost a year to read the book. I don’t take my success for granted and try to improve each time. There is a lot of hard work behind the tag ‘Renowned Author’. I just try to be honest in my writing every time.
Your latest novel entitled You’re the Password to My Life has been published this
month. Can you please tell us bit about this story?
We all have that one person in our lives in whose absence our existence seems meaningless. You’re the Password to My Life is such a story of 2 friends Virat and Kavya. From childhood, we are used to watching Bollywood movies where a guy and a girl eventually fall in love. But this book will break the stereotype bond of a girl and a guy and will show how friendship is the only ship that does not sink.
Could you please share 3 top tips with authors who want to write a contemporary romance novel?
Patience: The utmost thing needed for this genre is patience. Success doesn’t come overnight and it holds true here. Your work will be rejected, criticized and can be manipulated as per market. However, one needs to be patient till he or she gets a right publisher who will not only appreciate the work, but treat you as an author!
Hard work: I have seen people messaging me that even they want to write just to become famous. Behind fame, lies hard work. You need to have that burning desire to be the best and do the necessary hard work to produce good books each time. It’s not a cake walk as it seems from outside.
Honesty: I have observed with time, writers take writing for granted. I am completely against it. Every book you write should be treated as your first and you need to be honest while writing. Your persona is reflected through your writing and thus honesty towards your work really matters.
