Writing online is one of the easiest and best ways to gain experience and become established in the field. If you are looking for opportunities for writing online, read on to learn exactly how you can and where you can do so:
Starting a blog
Writing for your own blog can you give you the most freedom because you can write about what you find interesting. The key to starting a blog that you can maintain over a long period of time is to select a topic that you feel very passionate about, so that you will have plenty to write about. Choosing a topic that you don’t feel strongly about, runs the risk of you becoming bored over time, which then might result in your leaving your blog altogether.
Starting a blog can be very easy. You need to choose a blog platform (such as WordPress and Blogger), and you may or may not need some hosting space depending on the platform you use. Once you have the platform live, you’re good to go!
Writing for other blogs and online magazines
You need not to have your own blog in order to get recognised in the area of writing online. You can also write for owners of other blogs and online magazines. Doing so can be a great way to gain exposure as a credible writer, as you’ll usually be able to include a biography of yourself with your articles. The larger the blog or magazine you write for, the more your work will spread because of bigger readerships.
If you want to establish yourself as a writer in specific niches, then search for blogs and magazines in the areas you want to specialise in. Once you’ve found some, take a look at the general tone and structure of the articles at the site, find out if the owners accept guest articles and send a professional e-mail introduction of yourself.
Get yourself a regular column with an established brand
One of the best ways to become renowned in writing online is to get a regular column with a large online magazine, or newspaper that has a big online presence. This could involve writing an advice piece or an opinion article on a weekly or a fortnightly basis. Due to the large amounts of traffic these sites get, the potential for your work to reach out to many people will increase drastically, as will your credibility and online influence.
If you are already an established writer or an expert in a field, then it will be easier to get a regular column position with a blog, magazine or newspaper that is a big brand in itself, as the owners and managing editors want real experts, to help further the credibility of the sites they are running. However, even if you don’t have this level of experience, don’t let it prevent you from approaching well-known sites you want to write for. The more doors you knock on, the more chances of them opening!
