REVIEWED BY DEBS CARR
Amateur actress, Carrie Brownhill has been dating boyfriend, Huw since university and can’t wait for their forthcoming wedding day to arrive. When he doesn’t turn up to her final show with his usual bouquet of roses, Carrie drives to Huw’s farm only to find him sitting in the dark. He’s drunk, angry and desperately trying to find a way to tell her that he doesn’t want to marry her in two weeks time.
Four months later, having been dragged to town for a bit of retail therapy by her best friend Rowena in an effort to cheer Carrie up, they stop off at a pub. Carrie ends up talking to two acquaintances, who tell her they are on their way to a wedding, and where the groom is none other than her ex-fiancé, Huw. Furious, Carrie races to the wedding, and is just about to ruin everything when she is stopped by one of the guests, Matt Landor, a doctor, who has recently been sent back from a remote Pacific jungle to recuperate after a devastating accident.
Rowena realizing where her friend has disappeared to arrives at the church as Matt is ejecting Carrie and takes her home. She persuades her that what she needs is a holiday and together they plan their road trip in a borrowed orange VW Camper van. Carrie is packed and ready to leave when Rowena is offered the part of a lifetime and has to pull out of the trip. Determined not to spoil her friend’s holiday, she finds someone to replace her. Carrie is unimpressed when she discovers that her new travel partner is none other than Matt Landor, who not only dragged her out of the church, but is also an old friend of Huw’s.
Upset to discover that Huw’s wife is expecting his baby, she agrees to take the trip with Matt insisting that as they will both be sleeping in the minibus, there will have to be a few sexual ground rules. They set off on their journey, each having their own agenda and reasons for needing a holiday and meet up with friends, old and new along the way. Carrie is determined to move on from Huw, but is Spike the right person to move on with? And what about Matt with his female entourage? Does he prefer Lola or Natasha, or is there someone else on his mind instead?
I love Phillipa Ashley’s books and this was as enjoyable as I’d expected it to be with plenty of humour and much sexual tension between the gorgeous doctor and emotionally battered Carrie. A great story.
Definitely 9/10
