Our Book Deal Moment feature has now become My Brilliant Book Moment. After all, there are other times during an author's writing life when celebrations are in order. It could be a self-published author has hit the amazon top 100 – or even higher, or an author has made the best-seller list, or maybe their book has been optioned for a film.
Our first Brilliant Book Moment is an author celebrating a traditional publishing deal. Nicole Trilivas recalls when she was told about being signed up with Penguin Random House.
I was visiting my sister and good friend Carly in San Francisco, when I got “The Call.” My agent, Carrie Pestritto of the Prospect Agency, was practically yelling on the phone that an editor at Penguin Random House wanted Girls Who Travel. She had told me that the prestigious editor, Jackie Cantor, was interested a few days ago, but I didn’t get my hopes up. But the moment I heard Carrie’s voice on that sunny day in San Francisco, I knew it was good news!
To be honest, I was just sort of in this dreamy daze as she told me. I was walking along the streets of North Beach just floored as Carrie talked and talked about how wonderful this was (as if she had to tell me). I had been trying to become a “capital A” Author for so many years! When I hung up the phone, we happened to be right in front of the famous City Lights Bookstore. Carly took this photo of me (see below) right in front, and you can see the look of stunned happiness and pride coming out from right behind my eyes.
I wandered around that beautiful, historical bookshop with Carly for at least an hour, all the while thinking, “My book is going to be here one day!” It took a few days for the news to properly sink in, but when I think back on that wonderful day, I can still feel the rush of gratitude fluttering low in my belly.
On the day my novel was published, I celebrated with a pink cupcake and champagne. I live for moments like that!
