Thousands of Latvian book lovers formed a human paper chain across the capital city of Riga last week, to help transfer books from the nation’s old library to its new location.
Around 14,000 people – including visitors from Germany, Sweden, Switzerland and the USA – braved freezing temperatures to take part in the project, which marked the start of Riga’s 2014 European Capital of Culture tenure.
The first book to travel "The Chain of Book Lovers" to its new home was the Holy Bible in Latvian, published in 1825 in St. Petersburg, Russia. Over 2,000 books were moved hand-to-hand over a five hour period with the remainder of the library’s collection scheduled to be moved by motorised transport. We sort of want to form a human chain of books after seeing this. Meet us out back in five minutes. Bring all the books you can carry.
