There’s something of an apocalyptic feel to the adaptations out this October, with the onset of World War 3, the planet under attack from aliens, fighting a battle in space or revealing secrets that could topple governments. Of course there is also the very apocalyptic feel of a first love, courtesy of the master storyteller William Shakespeare. So sit back, enjoy and – if you can – stay positive! It’s not like it’s the end of the world…

Writer Meg Rosoff's novel How I Live Now gets its adaptation with a cast that includes Saoirse Ronan, George MacKay and Tom Holland. An American teenager has her summer with her family in England ruined by the onset of World War 3. It's emotional and dramatic and with Ronan at the helm, sure to be top class in the acting stakes.

Based on true events (and two books about them) The Fifth Estate follows Julian Assange and his team as they break government secrets, making them the most wanted people in the world. With an odd blond hairdo, Benedict Cumberbatch takes on Assange. The film also stars Daniel Brühl (Rush), Peter Capaldi (the impending Doctor), Dan Stevens (Downton Abbey) and many more.
Shakespeare's most infamous tale, Romeo and Juliet, gets another adaptation with a slightly more age appropriate Hailee Steinfeld as Juliet and Douglas Booth as Romeo. The film also has Damian Lewis and was even filmed on location in Italy!

Orson Scott Card's 1980s novel Ender's Game has been adapted into a visual spectacle. The film, which sees a young boy trained for battle in space stars Asa Butterfield, Harrison Ford and Ben Kingsley.
