Five very wise writing tips from the brilliant Rainbow Rowell this afternoon. Want to know more about Rainbow’s writing process, career or books? She will be answering your questions live for an entire hour on Twitter this afternoon from 3pm – just use the #NoveliciousBookClub tag. See you there!
1. Don’t worry even a little bit whether your book is on trend. All the trends will be trending differently by the time you get published, so it’s pointless to overthink it while you’re writing.
2. Finish your book before you try to make it perfect. You can paralyze yourself if you worry about getting everything just right. You’ll never finish.
3. Read outside your genre. Find inspiration in someone who’s doing something totally different from you. (This might not work for everyone, but it’s essential for me.)
4. Don’t cut jokes that make you laugh.
5. Remember that you’re not writing for everyone. You’re writing for the reader who connects with your style and perspective. Lots of people won’t want or like your book; that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t write it.
