I thoroughly enjoyed Margaret’s previous book for Choc Lit, The Silver Locket, and The Golden Chain lets us revisit various characters from that novel.
It’s now 1931 and Daisy Denham has returned to live in her father’s rundown family home in Dorset. She meets and falls in love with Ewan Fraser. Ewan is on holiday and staying with his mother at the home of someone who Daisy is later to discover, has something of a past with both her parents.
Daisy learns that her own history isn’t quite as simple as she’d always assumed and is devastated to find out that her parents have lied to her for years, and so when she has the chance to run away with Ewan to join a touring theatre company she is happy to go. He gives her a golden chain, which she promises to always keep close to her.
She soon realizes that Ewan is very talented and ambitious and that life with the members of the theatre company isn’t like anything she’s ever encountered before. When a handsome actor, Jesse Trent joins them and sets his sights on Daisy, she finds it very hard to resist and then when her own past starts catching up with her, Daisy is given choices to make that can change her life forever. She and Ewan seem to be destined for a future apart from each other and Daisy can’t seem to stop the gap between them from widening.
This is a beautifully written book and it was wonderful to meet familiar characters once again and see what had happened to them since the end of The Silver Locket. I wanted it to work out between Daisy and Ewan so much, but it seemed as if they had too many problems and differences for that to be able to happen. You’ll have to read it yourself to find out what does happen to them in the end, but I can assure you this book is well worth reading.
