I love it when a new Alexandra Potter book is released; I know that what I'm going to get is a quirky, upbeat story with a touch of magic that gives it the edge over others in the genre. When Potter's first book, What’s New Pussycat, was released it was just your average piece of chick lit, but with her last few books the author has upped the ante and her tales now have that sparkle that keeps you reading…
We meet Tess, the main character of the book, after her boyfriend, Seb, has just broken up with her. She’s devastated, which is to be expected, and her flatmate and best friend Fiona invites her to a New Year's Eve party to try and cheer her up. Tess goes but leaves early to go home and wallow in bed with her cat Flea. Tess drinks a whole bottle of tequila and has a sort of boyfriend bonfire (burning all of the stuff from her relationship with Seb) and falls asleep face down on her bedroom floor.
What follows is very amusing and somewhat confusing for Tess as she realises that the wish she made saying she wished she’d never met Seb, has actually come true. This is the perfect opportunity for Tess to start over with Seb and to become the perfect girlfriend.
As the story progressed I couldn’t help but wonder how well Tess’ plan was going to turn out. When you have to pretend to be someone that you’re not, it’s not exactly the strongest base for a relationship. As time went on and Tess was finding it increasingly difficult to be the perfect girlfriend, she comes to realise that maybe this isn’t the perfect relationship after all.
Yet again Alexandra Potter has written a upbeat, quirky piece of chick lit that can’t help but bring a smile to your face, especially the part after Tess and Seb have been to a Thai restaurant, that bit had me laughing like a loon!
