Laura and Jamie are back… with a baby, and just as with all things in the couple’s lives, it isn’t going to be without its mishaps. If anyone remembers my review of Love…From Both Sides you’ll remember that I was full of praise. I gave it 10/10 and said it was the best book I’d read all year -possibly one of my favourite books of all time. I was slightly nervous about reading the follow up. Would it be as funny? Would I still like Laura and Jamie? Would it be as hilarious with a baby? Well, after I’d reached the end of the first chapter and laughed so hard I nearly choked on my morning Cheerios, my worries were well and truly forgotten about. Thanks to Jamie and Laura’s haphazard approach to contraception, a quickie in front of the television results in them making a baby. They are suddenly faced with the prospect of being newlyweds, one with a crap job and one with no job at all. Jamie freaks out when Laura tells him the good news, and thinks she’s joking. But no. They’re actually pregnant. Love…and Sleepless Nights tracks the pregnancy from beginning to end; each twist and turn, and the obstacles they face as a couple, are all written with humour and realism. This has always been my reason for loving these two characters so much, I feel like I know them and want to be friends with them. Nick Spalding has created a couple that really comes to life on the page. They’re realistic, they make mistakes, they say things that they shouldn’t, you laugh both with them and at them and you always root for them. Some of my favourite scenes in the book include Laura’s pregnancy cravings (the supermarket scene had me laughing so hard I had to put the book down and come back to it when I could breathe again), going into labour in the Apple store and getting the birth certificate through. These were some of the funniest pieces of writing I have ever read. It’s safe to say that I am a huge Nick Spalding fan and, as a follow up, this book is no disappointment. If you are ever having a bad day, or even a good day, pick up either of these books and read them. I guarantee you will be laughing within minutes. 10/10 MORE ABOUT THIS BOOK
