I’ve never read a Little Black Dress book before, so it was with a sense of anticipation that I ordered my first LBD book in the shape of ‘The One That Got Away’ by Jessica Fox. This book is the first in a series called ‘The Hen Night Prophecies’ in which a group of friends book a psychic tarot reader for a hen night, who then reveals to each of them, information that will change their lives. In this novel, the tarot reader tells the protagonist Fern Moss, that she has already met the love of her life but alas, she let him go. Cue a frenzied search by Fern to discover who that man is. I am sorry to say that I thought this book was a bit rubbish, and was a real effort to finish. The character of Fern was a bit of a non-person. Purely a device to move forward the narrative, she had no real personality, bar a penchant for quirky clothes.

One of her exes Matt suffered strange personality changes throughout the book, one minute he was totally in love with Fern, the next he hated her, without any real explanation. I also found it incredibly annoying, that the man she had let go was…wait for it…her best (and very camp) friend who had been right under her nose all along! I am a huge believer that chick lit is just as tough to write as any other genre of book, and when done properly brings joy to many people, but this book just seemed lazy. It was rushed out and is the kind of novel that encourages snide comments about the genre. I will not be reading the rest of the Hen Night Prophecies, and I would recommend that you don’t either. As I mentioned before this was my first LBD book, and it just so happens that the book I chose was crap. I would love to hear about any good LBD books you can recommend, so that my faith can be restored! Note to Jessica Fox – your readers are intelligent women, don’t underestimate them!!
