If you want a book with enough sex, lies and scandal to last you an entire summer then look no further than Wicked Ambition, the latest sizzling bonkbuster from Victoria Fox. Set against the glamorous backdrop of some of the most famous places in America Wicked Ambition is a tale of purely that…wicked ambition and ruthless people all determined to get what they want no matter who they have to sleep with or lie to. But little do these people know that there is always someone out for revenge and they’re just waiting for America’s rich and famous to let their guard down. Wicked Ambition doesn’t hold back on the celebrity lifestyle angle; there are protagonists from all areas of film, music and television and I was intrigued by and quickly became wrapped up in their sordid little secrets very quickly. The book opens with a brilliant hook, a prologue that leaves you questioning who is who and what is going to happen, before slipping back in time and giving us the much wanted backstory. Turquoise, Robin and Kristin are all successful, glamorous women with everything…well almost everything. They are all battling with their own individual demons behind the scenes whilst their smiles on the red carpet give nothing away. Their stories and troubles are cleverly written and Victoria Fox manages to expertly weave in minor characters so that they subtly appear in each of the girl’s lives, with each girl harbouring a secret that could threaten their careers. I liked how strong they were as female protagonists, each prepared to fight for what they wanted. The men in this book also have their own troubles to contend with but, cashing in on the success of last summer’s Olympics, athlete Leon is by far the stand out delicious man you hope to get to know better. As with any bonkbuster there is a fair bit of, er…well…bonking and whilst I could feel my cheeks blushing a nice shade of crimson as I read, the scenes were never cringeworthy. Wicked Ambition is a tremendous guilty pleasure, full of unforgettable characters. It is fun and sexy, but bursting with dark twists and turns about the seedier side of being famous; it left me with my jaw hitting the floor many times before I finished it. What I enjoyed most of all about this novel was the pure bad behaviour of the characters – how scandalous they were, doing things that I would never dare to do. I loved that. Wicked Ambition takes the celebrity behind-the-scenes that we often imagine in our heads and brings them to life on the page. And it doesn’t apologise for it. It shocked me, it made me laugh and it hooked me in. For me, the mark of a good bonk buster is that it never pretends to be something that it’s not and that makes it a joy to read. If you’re looking for some juicy holiday reading, Wicked Ambition is pure, sizzling escapism. 7/10
