1. Read modern fiction – if you want to sell into the current market you have to see what sells now.
2. Carry a notebook with you for all those ideas you have and keep meaning to write down!
3. Find a place – even if it's a corner of the kitchen -where you can write.
4. Learn the mechanics of how to set a page out and present a manuscript. Work on your spelling, grammar and punctuation. There are lots of good books on the craft of writing – no matter how brilliant your idea is if someone can’t read what you’ve written then it’ll never see the light of day.
5. Join an active and lively writers’ group who aren’t afraid to offer constructive criticism. Ask if you can go along to a meeting or two before signing up!
