You need to make sure you sound interesting, and at the same time you need to make your potential employers realize your seriousness towards their organization. It’s important that you include an objective in your resume, tailored such that it matches the job you are applying for. The more specific you are, the better chance you have of being shortlisted for the job that is of your interest. The headline must be catchy and must reflect the interest that you have in obtaining the job that is on offer. It may be a good idea for you to check out some sample objectives or headlines available on the internet.
Explain the Benefits of your Skills
You may have a decent list of achievements and qualities. However, just listing them down may not do the trick. Instead of creating a long list with all your qualities, try to connect them with real life and work experiences. In other words, you need to back these qualities and strengths up. Merely stating that you can do something will not catch the attention of the employer. If you manage to explain how it will benefit his or her company, then you will greatly improve your chances of being selected.
Prioritize Your Content
It’s important to prioritize the content of your resume so that the most important and relevant qualities and strengths are listed first, with key accomplishments listed at the top of each position. This way, your stronger and more important experiences tend to get noticed, and this in turn, leads to getting your strengths across to the readers more effectively. Also, use effective titles for each section, and make sure they grab the attention. Try to be as descriptive as possible, giving the employer a good idea about the nature of your past work experiences.
Length
Ideally, your resume must be of one or two pages. Just keep in mind that, provided all the necessary information is there, the shorter your resume, the better. No employer wants to spend much time in reading about your strengths and weaknesses that have nothing to do with the position offered. It is advisable that you skip the irrelevant information like political affiliation, religion, etc. Keep your resume short, simple, and to the point. Also, use bullet marks wherever necessary, to highlight the points.
Proofread
Finally, once you are done writing your resume, it is very important that you proofread it, preferably more than once, to check for simple typos or grammatical errors. A small error may lead to a big loss, if not rectified. You could also have your relatives or friend proofread the resume for you, to get an outsider’s point of view. Also, you should keep an eye out for incorrect information. These days, the companies perform thorough background checks, and in case you have written any incorrect information, you stand a chance of losing your credibility.
