Most of us are avid music lovers. But there are some who want to take their love for music to the next level. Are you one of those few people who want to write a song? It can be challenging to think of creative yet catchy lyrics while writing a song. If your heart is set on writing a song that you can call your own, you might find these 5 songwriting tips handy.
1. Look for Inspiration
Every song that is written has some inspiration behind it. You need to find your inspiration. It could be anything. Maybe a song that you really like, or a poem you read recently. Maybe you really liked the story or the idea conveyed by the poem or song, and you feel strongly about telling the same story in your own words. In addition, inspiration could also come from within. Your passions could prove to be a great source of inspiration for your song writing. Passions can include your hobbies, environments, or even the person you love. Basically, all you have to do is write about what you love.
2. Remember your Heartbreaks
While most of the time, the lyrics come from inspiration and good memories, they can sometimes come from the deep dark corners of your heart too. Many songs are written about tragedies, the death of a loved one, or separation. If you have had such a traumatic experience in your life which has left a mark, you could use that to your advantage. Such experiences can help you write a good song not only because the song will turn out to be sad or emotional, but also because the experience is very real, and you feel strongly about it, having lived through it yourself.
3. Emotions
Also, the key to writing a good song is to capture the feeling and emotion of your concept. The subject of your song is obviously very close to your heart and you felt it was important enough to write about this idea, so immerse yourself in it and really tell the story. Don’t keep yourself tied to a leash and hold back. Let yourself go, connect with those emotions and feelings, and write what your heart really feels. That way, the emotions will be transferred from your heart to the paper, and the song will have a soul.
4. Rhyme Scheme
Coming to a rather technical aspect, while writing the lyrics to a song, you need to make sure you follow a pre-determined rhyme scheme. A tip here, avoid having all of your lines rhyme, and the rhymes that you do use should look natural. Also, don’t use weird words or phrases that sound out of place just to make the song rhyme. There is no hard and fast rule regarding the rhyme scheme of a song, but you need to figure out what exactly you are going to follow beforehand. We suggest you go for unconventional rhyme schemes and avoid clichés.
5. Practice
Finally, the most important thing you need to do while writing a song is PRACTICE. You need to keep writing, and believe that the good stuff will come. If at first your song does not turn out to be as good as expected, persevere. Keep writing until you get to the good stuff. Every line you write leads to better material. Never lose hope, and write down your feelings. The song will eventually complete itself.
