Sometimes, writers need some inspiration from their idols when they are stuck in a writer’s block or can’t figure out how to start their new story. If you are one of those budding writers who is stuck in such a situation, we have just the article for you. Legendary novelist Jackie Collins, whose books have sold over 500 million copies and have been translated into 40 languages, has some inspiring tips for you.
1. Find Yourself:
The first, and most important tip from Jackie is to always be unique and never to copy others! In her words, “The first rule of writing is write about what you know, not what you think you know.” So, think about what you’ve done in your life and write about that. Do not draw inspiration from the lives or experiences of other writers, find your own personal experiences and get inspired by them. By doing this, your books will have a more personal touch, and will appeal to the audiences more.
Another thing that every writer must do, before starting a new book or story, is research, a lot of it. She says, “I don’t believe in writing anything that I don’t know about or haven’t researched about personally. I like to transport the reader to places, and in order to do that I have to do the research.” If you have an idea for a story, make sure you research about all the aspects of the story adequately. The last thing you need is to feed the readers with inaccurate information, resulting in damage to reputation, especially in the case of non-fiction writing.
3. Love Your Characters:
Whenever you write a story, the characters that are involved in the story are the heart and soul of the story, and you really need to get them right. According to Jackie, “I really fall in love with my characters, even the bad ones. I love getting together with them. They tell me what to do; they take me on a wild and wonderful trip.” If you fall in love with the characters and step into their shoes, the story will write itself. The characters will be more realistic and lovable, causing the readers to empathize with them, and this will eventually lead to a well-received story.
4. Stay Inspired:
For any writer, inspiration is the drug that keeps them going. If you lose the passion for writing new stories, you lose everything. Jackie has always maintained, “I love what I do. I have a passion for it”. If you have that passion when you start writing your new book, you will believe that something epic is going to happen even before you start writing it, and once you do start, you will be filled with endless exciting ideas and plots that you never knew you could think of. Stay inspired, it is the best motivator.
5. Advice for New Authors:
Finally, Jackie also has advice for any new and upcoming authors that wish to make it big. She says, “I would advise people to try and publish themselves because they’ll do better than they’ll do with a publisher.” Be your own boss, and do not tone down your style for any publisher. Sometimes, new authors may find it hard to get published, and this de-motivates them. The key is to never get disheartened. You have got to get the buzz going, and you should not give up until the buzz is created. Publish yourself, do not depend on other publishers. Once you do this, the success that follows will be that much sweeter.
