10 Words to Describe a Funny Child

By Rebecca Parpworth-Reynolds

words to describe a funny child

Are youย writing a childrenโ€™s novel? Do you plan to write some hilarious scenes in it? Here are 10 words to describe a funny child that may help you.

1. Cheeky

Definition

Beingย rude, but in a way that is funny.

Examples

โ€œEven though he knew that he shouldnโ€™t, he shot aย cheekyย grin at the teacher.โ€

โ€œAlthough to others he was seen asย cheekyย and adorable, for his parents, he could be a real handful.โ€

How it Adds Description

Sometimes being funny can often end up making someone seem disrespectful and rude, and this can sometimes be especially true when it comes to children who are still learning what they can get away with! Often this is taken in good spirits though, but it certainly makes them โ€œcheekyโ€!

2. Giggly

Definition

Laughing a lot or prone toย laughingย easily.

Examples

โ€œHerย gigglyย nature had gotten her sent out of class quite a few times when she had been unable to control herself.โ€

โ€œTheir bright and happy baby was now aย gigglyย and mischievous toddler. How time had flown!โ€

How it Adds Description

Funny people, including children are often laughing, whether at their own jokes or at other things that have amused them. Therefore, you can describe them as โ€œgigglyโ€. A giggle as opposed to a laugh is often lighter in pitch and quality, making it perfect to describe a funny childโ€™s reaction and behavior.

3. Goofy

Definition

Silly, usually in an amusing way.

Examples

โ€œEven though oftentimes he did not mean to, hisย goofyย antics quickly made him into the class clown.โ€

โ€œHisย goofyย grin was infectious, even if he had just caused a mess in the kitchen.โ€

How it Adds Description

Goofy children are often funny because of their demeanour, and usually for things they didnโ€™t actually intend to be funny! If the child in your story has a natural propensity for silliness, then try describing them as โ€œgoofy.โ€

4. Hysterical

Definition

Extremely funnyย to the point where someone loses control.

Examples

โ€œThe prank left him completelyย hystericalย with laughter. The look on her face was priceless!โ€

โ€œYou either found Lucas Jones to be completelyย hysterical, or the bane of your existence. Most teachers found him to be the latter.โ€

How it Adds Description

If your child is seriously funny to the point where others canโ€™t stop laughing, then โ€œhystericalโ€ is a good way to describe them, but also the effect that they have on other people. However, there may always be those that donโ€™t find things to be all that hilarious, or they might go too far!

5. Ludicrous

Definition

Ridiculousย or foolish.

Examples

โ€œAlthough what he had done was completelyย ludicrousย and unthinkable to most people, it didnโ€™t change the fact that it was hilarious.โ€

โ€œTheir son often said suchย ludicrousย things in his misunderstanding that everyone couldnโ€™t help but laugh at his remarks.โ€

How it Adds Description

Often funny people are up to things that others would consider foolish, or completely ridiculous to attempt. However, the result usually ends up in a laugh! To illustrate this kind of personality to your reader, try using โ€œludicrousโ€ to describe your funny child.

6. Playful

Definition

Funny or carried out in aย non-seriousย manner.

Examples

โ€œHe was always such aย playfulย child, so much so that it was hard to tell if something was ever wrong with him.โ€

โ€œHe was popular on the playground due to beingย playfulย with every single child he encountered, no matter if he had never seen them before.โ€

How it Adds Description

People and children that are funny often see things as less serious, or like a game. As a result, โ€œplayfulโ€ can be a great way to describe how they interact with the world and other characters in your story.

7. Prankster

Definition

A person who enjoysย playing jokesย on other people.

Examples

โ€œHe was a complete and utterย prankster. Anyone who knew him had to remember to keep on their toes just in case they fell victim to one of his jokes.โ€

โ€œHis teachers and classmates knew him as aย prankster, although he was never malicious about it.โ€

How it Adds Description

One of the ways in which people create humor or try to be funny is by playing jokes or pranks on others. If this suits the young character you are creating, then consider describing them as a โ€œpranksterโ€ to your reader! Pranksters can have good intentions or be nefarious in their japes.

8. Ridiculous

Definition

Stupidย in a laughable way.

Examples

โ€œThe joke the boy told was soย ridiculousย that the fact none of it made sense made it all the more hilarious.โ€

โ€œHis attempts to gain the attention of the rest of the class were becoming more and moreย ridiculous. The teacher would catch on soon.โ€

How it Adds Description

Sometimes things that simply do not make sense can be some of the funniest things out there. Often children due to their lack of understanding of the world or through having fewer social inhibitions can end up creating โ€œridiculousโ€ situations that leave others chuckling!

9. Unpredictable

Definition

Changing suddenlyย and without warning.

Examples

โ€œEven for his age, he was always changing things up when it came to his pranks. He was completelyย unpredictable,ย catching many people unawares.โ€

โ€œToddlers areย unpredictableย by nature, meaning that parents can often end up experiencing some funny situations!โ€

How it Adds Description

Sometimes humor can come out of the blue, especially when it comes to children doing or saying something that we were completely not expecting to happen! Therefore, a funny child in your story likely has a personality or behaves in a way that is โ€œunpredictableโ€ to other characters.

10. Upbeat

Definition

Filled with hope andย positive energy.

Examples

โ€œEven though some people could get annoyed at his jokes, hisย upbeatย nature never kept them upset with him for long.โ€

โ€œIt was hard not to beย upbeatย around her, she was always making people laugh and smile.โ€

How it Adds Description

Funny children are often those that are in a good mood most of the time, and so โ€œupbeatโ€ is a great way to describe their personalities. Often, their positive vibes can rub off on other people, making them feel good too, and helping even the most stoic of characters to crack a smile!
