Writing a cute cat in your story can be fun! If you need some assistance, take a look at the following 10 words to describe a cat ending in -ing.

1. Purring

Definition

A low vibrating sound made when cats are happy.

Examples

โ€œThe purring kitten slowly settled down in its owner’s lap, forcing the owner to sit as still as a statue.โ€

โ€œShe glanced at the purring cat, and her heart melted. Its furry face was relaxed and almost smiling!โ€

How it Adds Description

โ€œPurringโ€ is an action associated with cats, and itโ€™s especially common when theyโ€™re relaxed. Therefore, โ€œpurringโ€ shows your reader that the fictional cat is relaxed and at ease. This might draw the character’s attention, as itโ€™s hard to resist a cute feline! It also shows that the cat is comfortable in the characterโ€™s presence.

2. Annoying

Definition

Something or someone that makes you feel impatient or slightly angry.

Examples

โ€œHe found the cats annoying, but he didnโ€™t let his feelings slip in front of their owners.โ€

โ€œShe felt bad for the annoying cat. It desperately needed attention, and everyone was ignoring it.โ€

How it Adds Description

While cats can be cute animals, if they follow you around or keep scratching you, they can become โ€œannoying.โ€ If characters call a cat โ€œannoying,โ€ it shows theyโ€™re not a fan of cats or maybe animals in general. โ€œAnnoyingโ€ cats arenโ€™t always malicious. Often they just want some love or affection because theyโ€™re lonely.

3. Calming

Definition

Something that leaves you feeling relaxed or tranquil.

Examples

โ€œThe teacher found the kittens calming, especially after a long day of teaching her pesky students.โ€

โ€œHer parents bought her a calming cat to help her soothe her anxiety attacks.โ€

How it Adds Description

The word โ€œcalmingโ€ shows that the fictional cat helps characters relax. This could be due to its relaxed personality or because it gives them physical affection through cuddles. Characters might seek out a โ€œcalmingโ€ cat when theyโ€™re worried or scared to pacify their emotions.

4. Frustrating

Definition

Something that makes you annoyed or angry because you canโ€™t do anything about it.

Examples

โ€œHe spied the frustrating cat and hid from it. Though it was pathetic, he didnโ€™t have enough patients to cope with its incessant meowing today.โ€

โ€œShe loved animals, but the frustrating kitten was making her second guess her feelings.โ€

How it Adds Description

If a character uses the word โ€œfrustrating,โ€ it implies that the fictional cat is not well-behaved, and this causes people to become annoyed or angry in its presence. A cat could be โ€œfrustratingโ€ because of constant meowing, catching mice, or simply demanding too much affection from busy owners. Characters who feel frustrated by cats might not be great with animals or children.

5. Horrifying

Something thatโ€™s very shocking, scary, or disgusting.

Examples

How it Adds Description

The adjective โ€œfascinatingโ€ shows one of your characters has a fixation on a cat because they find it interesting or beautiful. 8. Perplexing

Definition

Something that you donโ€™t know how to deal with or donโ€™t understand.

Examples

โ€œThe perplexing cat left him feeling puzzled, but this only inspired him to spend more time playing with the feline.โ€

Examples

โ€œThe group of amusing tabby kittens pounced from rooftop to rooftop while enjoying the summer evening.โ€

โ€œShe glanced down at her amusing pal and smiled. She knew her cat was her best friend forever.โ€

How it Adds Description

If you want to show your cat leaves people feeling happy or full of laughter, โ€œamusingโ€ is an excellent pick. This could be through doing funny things or simply through its cheery personality. Characters might seek out the โ€œamusingโ€ cat when theyโ€™re down to cheer them up, making them take on the role of a comfort animal. โ€œAmusingโ€ cats can also offer comic relief after a tense situation.
