2014 has already brought us adaptations of 12 Years a Slave and The Railway Man, but it’s not all heartbreaking memoirs to look forward to in terms of adaptations this year. Here are just some of the best to look out for:
The Book Thief
Based on the incredible novel by Markus Zusak, this powerful story follows a teenage girl as she adapts to her new foster parents in a small part of Germany, just as World War II begins. The story is being brought to the big screen by Downton Abbey director Brian Percival and stars Emily Watson and Geoffrey Rush as Liesel Meminger’s foster parents. Young actress Sophie Nélisse takes on the role of Liesel.
A Long Way Down
A story about four strangers who meet as they plan to commit suicide doesn't sound like a great start for a comedy, but in the hands of Nick Hornby, this story is poignant, hilarious and very emotional. The film adaptation stars Pierce Brosnan, Imogen Poots, Aaron Paul and Toni Colette and, from the look of the trailer, seems to have captured the very heart of the story.
Gone Girl
Gillian Flynn wrote both the book on which this film is based and the screenplay. The book, about a woman who mysteriously vanishes on her wedding day, has sparked plenty of debate. The film stars Rosamund Pike and Ben Affleck and is directed by David Fincher (Fight Club, The Social Network, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button). There hasn't been much released about the film just yet so keep your eyes open!
Mockingjay
The third book from The Hunger Games series written by Suzanne Collins is being split into two films and the first part of these arrives near the end of the year. Julianne Moore and others join the already incredible cast, which includes Jennifer Lawrence, Woody Harrelson, Elizabeth Banks and Jena Malone.
Which adaptation are you looking forward to seeing this year? Are you reading any books in preparation?
