We interviewed talented author Arpita Chipkar who has just released her debut book, a mystical romance novel entitled Are You Magic Or Am I A Trick? Miracles Happen! Read on to find out what Arpita had to say.
Hi Arpita, and welcome to e-Books India! Thank you for joining us for this interview. Can you start off by telling us a bit about you? Where are you from? What are your qualifications and what work do you do?
Thank you. I am from Karwar, which is a coastal city that is situated on the border of Karnataka and Goa. I am an active blogger at arpitachipkar.blogspot.in. I have contributed to many publications over the last five years. I am a student of B.A (Psychology). I am currently pursuing a Masters in Mass Communication and Journalism from Nitte University, Mangalore. Well, I am still confused about my educational qualifications as my college thinks I should join a distance Education course in order to pursue my dreams in the field of Literature. After getting zero per cent appreciation from my college, I am still wondering if I should join a script writing course!
You’ve recently published your debut novel entitled Are You Magic Or Am I A Trick? Miracles Happen! Can you please tell us a bit about this story?
Are You Magic Or Am I A Trick? is a story of a young author whose fictional character comes alive during the success party of her novel. He exactly matches the Mr Perfect of her imaginations and also recites her unfinished poem. He hints about her untold secrets and desires.
The novel revolves around the mystical romance between the protagonist and
her Mr Perfect who miraculously comes to life….
How did the idea to write Are You Magic Or Am I A Trick? Miracles Happen! come about?
I have always being fascinated by fairy tales and fantasy stories and wondered what if our day dreams came true? I also thought what if someday I write a novel (romantic fiction) and the hero comes alive?
I wanted to pen down a trilogy of mystical romance fiction.
Can you please tell us a bit about your writing approach? For instance, do you follow a certain structure in terms of scene setting, plot creation and character development? Or do allow your stories to emerge as you write?
I like discussing my plot with my mother who is also a writer. She is the source of my creation. I do no such planning and plotting. I let myself type whatever comes to my mind. I make sure that I take very little time. I believe in having a good flow. I have completed my first novel in less than 20 days.
Who are your favourite authors and what do you like about their books?
I like many authors. Chetan Bhagat – 2 States, Franz Kafka – Metamorphosis, The Great Indian Novel by Shashi Tharoor are few of my favourites. The list goes on. I think I am less of a reader and more of a writer. I often have too much to express.
I remember, picking up Metamorphosis and in the middle of reading it, getting diverted and penning down my own story
From your experiences of writing and getting Are You Magic Or Am I A Trick? Miracles Happen! published, can you please share 3 key lessons for budding authors who want to do the same?
1. Become an author, get your book published, the college gives no damn! The educational system in India only focuses on the attendance and marks. Even in the courses like Mass Communication and Journalism, it is more about the bookish parrot grasping than the practical knowledge. Though I am a 8 point grader, I was still mentally tortured at my college for not having enough attendance!
2. The journey has just begun. There are many more milestones to achieve.
3. I am the learner of life. The process has just begun!
