Today, we’re very happy to welcome New York Times bestselling author Kat Martin to e-Books India. Continue reading to learn about Kat who is a prolific writer. You’ll find out about her background, her approach to writing, the types of books she writes, including her latest story entitled INTO THE WHIRLWIND.
Please tell us about you. Where are you from? What is your professional background and how did you become an author?
I was born in a small town in the San Joaquin Valley of California, attended college at the University of California in Santa Barbara. After graduation, I went into the Real Estate profession and worked in sales for over ten years. I married a man who was also in Real Estate and he had written a novel but hadn’t been able to sell it. I loved the book. I was helping him with the grammar and spelling when I realized I would like to try writing a novel of my own. A year and a half later, I completed the book. I was fortunate to have my first book published a year later and have written more than 65 novels since then.
What types of books do you write?
I started writing Historical Romance novels. I was always interested in history, particularly the American west, so western romances were a natural place for me to begin. After that, I wrote a number of books set in Regency and Victorian England, then started writing Contemporary Romantic Suspense, which is what I write today.
Could you please tell us about your most recent book, its overall plot, and the main characters in it?
INTO THE WHIRLWIND is the second book in my BOSS INC. trilogy, set in a detective agency in Seattle, Washington. When Megan O’Brien’s three-year-old son is kidnapped, the former lingerie model goes to the only man she trusts–private investigator, Dirk Reynolds, her former bodyguard, the man who still owns heart. Desperate for Dirk’s help, Meg is willing to risk everything to save little Charlie.
INTO THE WHIRLWIND is a powerful story that delves into the murky world of high stakes gambling, international crime, and terrible danger.
Are you working on any other books(s)? If so, can you please tell us what we can expect to see from you in the future?
In February of next year, INTO THE FIRESTORM will be released, the third book in the trilogy. Luke Brodie is one of the country’s top bounty hunters. If he brings in escaped international criminal, Rudy Vance, he’ll collect a $600,000 bail enforcement fee. Emma Sullivan is also hunting Vance. It’s been almost a year since she arrived at her sister’s house to find the housekeeper murdered and her young niece the victim of Vance’s sick assault.
Emma is determined to find Rudy Vance and make him pay–and not even the infamous Luke Brodie is going to stop her.
Can you please tell us about your approach to writing? For example, do you follow structures and writing rules? Or do you write in a free flow way? Do you have any particular time of the day you like to write? Or any specific environment you prefer to sit down and write in?
When I started writing, I studied how to write and read lots of different writing techniques. It took me a year and a half and 32 rewrites to complete my first novel. Now, after having written more than sixty books, I write a single draft. That means I write ten pages, go back the next day, rewrite what I wrote, and write ten more. I do the same the next day. When I reach the end of the book, it’s pretty well finished. I still make changes, go back through it several more times, but mostly just looking for errors, sharpening and polishing the prose. It’s not a good idea for new writers, but as I said, after so many books, I can move ahead fairly quickly. Since there’s a good deal of research, and it also takes time to construct the storyline, it still takes me 6 months to complete a book.
Do you have any favourite authors? If so, who are they and what do you like about their work?
Lots of favourite authors. I am a voracious reader. I like Grisham and Nora Roberts, I like Heather Graham, Cindy Gerard, enjoy most of the big bestselling authors. I love romantic mystery and suspense, enjoy paranormal novels and literary novels once in a while. I like books that keep me reading from the very first page. I don’t want to wade through a third of the story before I get hooked.
What other things do you like to get up to when you’re not writing?
Since I live in Montana, a very mountainous, rural state, I love the outdoors. I like camping and being in the woods. I also like going to a big city, staying in a five star hotel and eating gourmet food.
