Book Nerd Life: 5 New Book Club Ideas

By Novelicious

Has your book club run out of steam? Do you disagree over what novels you should be reading every month? Are members eschewing meetings in favour of a night in with KFC and Corrie? It might be time to rethink your club’s modus operandi. Here are five fresh ideas for new book clubs to try.

Sweet Valley High - Heartbreaker

1. The Teenage Favourites Book Club

We’re talking Sweet Valley High, Point Horror, Malory Towers … all the old favourites you adored in your book nerd youth! As we learned during our Nostalgic Summer ReRead last year, there’s no better feeling than digging out old paperback friends and devouring them with fresh eyes. Bonus: Swooning over Todd Wilkens with your mates – just like the old days.

Margarita

2. The Feasting on Fiction Book Club

Don’t just read the book, but cook up the food and drink mentioned, too! Bonus: Literary cocktails. All night long.

Death on the Nile

3. The Whodunit Book Club

Whether it’s true crime, Scandinavian thrillers or Agatha Christie classics, read each mystery slowly and meet after big cliffhangers to discuss theories. Bonus: Make it a race to see which book club member can crack the case first.

Millie Marottas Animal Kingdom

4. The Colouring Book Club

Adult colouring books are all the rage for good reason; they settle the mind and destress (science!) plus they’re just plain good fun. Take the pressure off and meet once a month for a wine-drinking, gossip-flowing colouring session. Bonus: There’s no need to finish a lengthy novel so anyone can join – no matter how busy their lives are.

Riders by Jilly Cooper

5. The Erotica Book Club

Sometimes really bad writing can be really good fun, as The Guardian’s Bad Sex Award proves every year. From E.L. James to Jilly Cooper, pick the sauciest cover you can find, stock up on the wine and delight in reading the most cringe-worthy lines aloud with your girlfriends.
