Are you searching for book publishers in Calgary, Alberta?

Below are 6 you should know about.

1. University of Calgary Press

A Calgary-based university publishing house, it has become an Open Access press in 2010, with the release of the book “Grey Matters, a Guide for Collaborative Research”. Currently, their main focus is that of connecting local experience to the international community, and they manage to do this by publishing peer-reviewed scholarly books.

Through Open Access publishing, the University of Calgary Press also makes its books available in PDF format, as well as in eBook format, in order to reach a wider audience. However, not all of their publications are Open Access – you can search for the exceptions here.

The series they have published so far include Africa: Missing Voices, Canadian History and Environment, Energy Histories, Cultures, and Politics, and several others. In terms of genres, they publish academic non-fiction regarding the humanities and social sciences, poetry, innovative fiction, and creative forms.

Among their titles you will find “A Historical and Legal Study of Sovereignty in the Canadian North: Terrestrial Sovereignty, 1870-1939”, “Animal Metropolis: Histories of Human – Animal Relations in Urban Canada”, “After Appropriation: Explorations in Intercultural Philosophy and Religion”, and countless others.

Whether your manuscript fits their specialized series or their general topics, they welcome submissions from all Canadian citizens. If you feel like they could be the right choice for you, their Submission Guidelines are available here.

2. Broadview Press

With several offices throughout Canada, Broadview Press was founded by Don LePan in 1985. It is an independent publisher with a complex focus, as it has an internationally-oriented publishing program, which consists of titles that are of interest for academics, students, and general readers.

Although their main interest is represented by the humanities, they are open to a wide array of political and academic approaches, such as the feminist perspective. Even though they publish for several geographical markets, they also produce books which place an emphasis on Canadian culture.

Environmental issues are also one of their top priorities, which is why they have ethically-oriented policies and actions. Once you choose to browse their book categories, you will find English studies, philosophy, communication, trade literature, history, political theory, liberal studies, writing and composition, along with a few others.

If you want to publish your work with Broadview Press, you can find their Submission Guidelines on their website. Scholars with underrepresented backgrounds in academia and publishing are especially welcome to submit their manuscripts.

3. EDGE Science Fiction and Fantasy Publishing

Founded by Brian Hades, EDGE published its first book in 2000: “The Black Chalice”, by Marie Jakober. This was a proper start, as it won three awards and obtained positive feedback from both readers and reviewers.

As an imprint of Hades Publications, they specialize in trade paperback and eBook novels, anthologies, and collections of fantasy, horror, and science fiction. If you want to know more about the books they have already published, you can find them here.

If your work consists of science fiction or fantasy literature, the EDGE team may be able to help you produce and promote your book. Before submitting the manuscript, though, make sure that you carefully read the Submission Guidelines.

4. Durvile Publications

With a wide range of services, Durvile Publications is a publishing company that produces books, eBooks, audio books, as well as videos/podcasts. You can find their 2019 publications here.

The company is specialized in true crimes and true cases – their titles include “Tough Crimes: True Cases by Top Canadian Criminal Lawyers”, “SHRUNK: Crime and Disorders of the Mind”, and “Women in Criminal Justice: True Cases By and About Canadian Women and the Law”. They also have a poetry section available.

If you want to check all of their publications, you can find them here. Once you decide to collaborate with them, don’t forget to read their Submission Guidelines as well.

5. Freehand Books

Founded in 2007, Freehand Books was initially the literary imprint of Broadview Press – however, after publishing forty titles, it became independent in 2016. Besides offering services throughout the entire editorial process, they also make sure that the production and promotion of each book will allow authors to successfully reach a wide audience.

Their main focus consists of fiction, creative non-fiction, and poetry from both aspiring and established authors. Their books can be found here, with titles varying from “Every Wolf’s Howl”, a memoir by Barry Grills, to “Agnes, Murderess”, by Sarah Leavitt.

They publish short story collections, graphic literature, literary novels, and many others. Freehand Books is particularly interested in helping underrepresented categories of writers publish their work, among which they mention LGBT+ members, Indigenous writers, writers with disabilities, and others. However, they are also interested in publishing the works of Western Canadian writers as well.

If you’re thinking about submitting your work, you can find their Submission Guidelines online. They usually try to respond within 6 months, and they prefer to communicate with the authors via email.

6. Rocky Mountain Books

A top outdoor literature publisher in Canada, Rocky Mountain Books began its journey in 1979, when it was founded by the passionate mountaineers Tony and Gillean Daffern.

Ever since, the company has broadened its range of categories – on their website you can find biographies, guidebooks, history, indigenous studies, nature, photography and art, along with children’s books, but there is much more to discover: each category is divided into several subcategories, thus including countless outdoor-related topics. For instance, the guidebooks category consists of climbing, cycling, hiking, skiing, snowshoeing, and family and popular hikes.

In short, some of their preferred topics are adventure travel, environmental consciousness, and outdoor culture. If you want to become familiar with their already published works, you can find all of them here.

Their Submission Guidelines are available online, in case you want to connect with them for a possible collaboration.

I am a content writer from Romania. My projects involve non-fiction writing, academic writing, product reviews, as well as technical writing. Although I have a personal preference for articles regarding social issues and human rights, I can provide content on any other topic.
