It's hard to believe we're in December already. 2012 really has flown by! But what a year it's been for adaptations. We've had classics like Anna Karenina and Great Expectations, coming-of-age tales like The Perks of Being a Wallflower and On the Road, comic fun from The Dark Knight Rises to Avengers Assemble and modern-day romances like The Lucky One.
The year is far from over though as the holiday season approaches. We've got two enormous blockbuster adaptations still to come along and some Cruise-filled action that's potentially, well, a bit of a reach.
Thursday 13th December
The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey
Peter Jackson returns to Middle Earth after the tremendous success of the Lord of the Rings trilogy with a closer look at where it all began for Bilbo Baggins. Based on the book The Hobbit, written by J. R. R. Tolkien and taking some of what is mentioned in the Lord of the Rings books, this is the first of three Hobbit films – so get comfortable! Martin Freeman, Ian McKellen and Richard Armitage all star.

Life of Pi
Based on the Man Booker Prize winning book by Yann Martel, this adaptation is set to wow audiences just before Christmas arrives. Director Ang Lee brings the story of a boy shipwrecked at sea with a royal bengal tiger to life using 3D and not a big-named star in sight.

Jack Reacher
The casting of Tom Cruise as the infamous Jack Reacher – a character made famous by author Lee Child – was met with outrage by fans of Child's books. Though Cruise has proven his action-man status with the Mission Impossible films, we'll just have to wait and see if he can successfully pull off the anti-hero Reacher.
Midnight's Children by Salman Rushdie
Another Booker Prize winner – this time back in 1981 – Salman Rushdie's book follows a pair of children who are born moments after India gained independence from Britain and grow up in a world very different to that of their parents.
Special mention this month has to go to the delightfully crass a capella film, Pitch Perfect which stars Anna Kendrick (Twilight, Up in the Air) as a reluctant university student coerced into joining an a capella group. Very rude, very funny and great fun! It's American Pie meets Glee.
