Yeah?
[Nods] Yep.
God, you haven't had a real crush in a while. Not since Big.
Big wasn't a crush he was a crash.
Eating was something of a favourite pastime with Carrie, Miranda, Samantha and Charlotte. Breakfast, brunch, lunch, dinner or grabbing a snack from a street vendor or bakery was how they got together. It was where they had their conversations, discussed their (sex) lives and the food, more often than not, was related. (Excuse me, can I cancel my rice pudding?)
Carrie telling Miranda she had a crush was an iconic scene. Firstly, the conversation. Carrie was saying she had a crush on someone for the first time since her heart was broken by Big. This was the beginning of Carrie's second most important relationship with a man. Aidan Shaw.
And secondly, they were eating cupcakes. Just as Carrie was at the forefront of fashion, the cupcake scene sitting outside the Magnolia Bakery in New York sparked a craze for the little cake that has been with us since.
If it was just the two of them sitting on a bench, chatting, the scene would not have been as memorable. But add the cupcake and Carrie trying, but failing, not to get it all around her face and you have an unforgetable scene. In fact, it is possibly the most memorable foodie scene from Sex and the City – both in the series and the films. And there were quite a few. (Sushi, anyone?)
The scene is taken from season 3, episode 5 – no ifs, ands or butts. We have Charlotte having her face attacked by a lousy kisser, Samantha seeing conquests and not colour and Miranda not being terribly supportive of Steve's chance to win a million bucks by scoring a tricky shot in basketball.
If I'm being truthful I'm not a massive fan of the cupcake. They can be icky sweet and have far too much buttercream on the top, setting my teeth on edge. However, the way Carrie eats it, with crumbs over her face, licking her lips, makes my stomach kick start with the hunger pangs. The way it is filmed, friends confiding on a bench in New York, seduces you into thinking this is what you need to eat, right now.
If you would like to recreate Carrie's lip smacking cupcake you can go to Martha Stewart's website where she has the Magnolia Bakery's recipe – although this is in American measurements. For British measurements you can make a recipe from the Hummingbird Bakery recipe book – which is the one I made above. Their vanilla cupcake recipe is here.
