Sue's daughter, Charlotte, is in a coma. It appears she deliberately stepped in front of a bus and now Sue wants – needs – to know what could have possibly prompted her to do such a thing. Her daughter is seemingly happy. Why would she take her own life?
When Sue finds Charlotte's diary, she uncovers a final entry that states keeping the secret is killing her. What secret? Sue is desperate to find answers and the first place she's going to start is with her stepson, Oli. So, prepared for his visit, she opens a packet of chocolate hobnobs, which he hoovers up within the first ten minutes of being home, and starts to question him on what he might know about his sister.
But Oli is only the start of Sue's investigation. She needs to go a lot deeper into her daughter's life and, rather frighteningly, it seems her own past is going to catch up with her in the process.
These rather fantastic, easy to make homemade chocolate hobnobs are perfect with a book and a cuppa. A word of warning though – if you plan on eating these whilst reading The Accident, you might not realise just how many biscuits you are tucking into…
Mixing bowl and a baking tray greased or covered in baking parchment
Ingredients
125g butter
1 tsp golden syrup
1 tsp hot water
1/4 tsp bicarbonate of soda
125g self-raising flour
125g caster sugar
125g rolled oats
1 large bar of your favourite chocolate
Method
- Pre-heat oven to 180 regular or 160 fan.
- In a saucepan melt the butter with the syrup and the water.
- Remove from the heat and stir in the bicarbonate of soda.
- In a mixing bowl, mix the rest of the ingredients.
- Pour over the butter mixture and combine.
- Take teaspoon sized pieces of the mixture, roll into a ball and place on the baking tray.
- Bake for 10-12 minutes until starting to brown.
- Remove from oven, allow to harden for a few minutes, then place on a wire rack.
- Melt the chocolate, either in a microwave or in a bowl over a saucepan of hot water.
- Spoon a thin (or thick) layer onto the cooled biscuits.
These biscuits may just be better than the real thing.
