The romance of Jane Eyre and finding The One at the age of 18, romance novelist Katie Fforde has stopped by for a natter. You can read a sampling of Katie’s latest writing in the Truly, Madly, Deeply anthology.
What’s your favourite romantic book of all time and why?
My favourite romantic book of all time is Jane Eyre. I have read it lots of times and I always find it romantic if a bit of a tear jerker.
And your favourite romantic film? The kind you can curl up with on a rainy day with a tub of ice cream and a duvet.
My favourite film is Bridget Jones’s Diary. It is romantic, but it is also funny and clever.
What is your top tip for writing romance?
My top tip to writing romance is to read a lot of it and see a) what you like to read and b) how it’s done. A lot about writing is picked up by osmosis.
What’s the most romantic experience you’ve ever had? Something that really captured your heart?
My most romantic experience was lying on the shores of the Dordogne River in South West France with the man who is now my husband. We were both staying with his mother, and my mother was there too. There was a frisson between us, but nothing had happened yet. We were reading Animal Farm to each other. Those afternoons (there were several) were filled with promise, but also a bit of trepidation. It was only days after my 18th birthday. I felt far too young to have found The One. But 40 years later, he is still The One.
Thanks, Katie!
