For summer-lovers, and I mean those that live for summer and bask in it, the downside to August is that it is all too soon followed by September. So for those book nerds out there who are dreading the return to darker evenings and misty mornings, we thought we’d put together five books worth reading. Just so you know the cooler days are nothing to dread.
1. Me Before You by Jojo Moyes – Me Before You is the story of Lou Clark, who forms a special relationship with a recently-paralysed man, Will Traynor. After his motorcycle accident, Will lost his desire to live, but he hadn’t anticipated meeting Lou.
2. The Lake House by Kate Morton – It’s June 1933 and the Edevane family are preparing for their much anticipated Midsummer Eve Party. Alice Edevane, a 16-year-old budding writer, is excited because not only has she just worked out a brilliant twist for her novel, but she has fallen in love with someone she shouldn’t. Before the clock strikes midnight. however, the Edevane family will suffer a loss so great they leave their beloved lake house forever. Seventy years later Sadie Sparrow, on a break from the police force, discovers the neglected house. She sets to work and tries to solve the mystery of the little boy who disappeared without a trace…
3. The Woman Who Walked in Sunshine by Alexander McCall Smith (No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency) –As business is slow at the No.1 Ladies Detective Agency, Mma Ramotswe is persuaded to take her first ever holiday. She nearly cancels her trip when a client arrives just as she’s about to leave, but Mma Makutsi makes her go. So, Precious asks Charlie to be her eyes and ears…
4. The Santangelos by Jackie Collins – This is the ninth novel about the Santangelo family. Lucky Santangelo has to deal with enemies, a drug-addled Colombian club owner and a sex-crazed Italian family. Meanwhile Max, her teenage daughter, is becoming the ‘it’ girl in Europe’s modeling world. And her son, Bobby, is being set up for a murder he didn’t commit.
5. Three and a Half Heartbeats by Amanda Prowse – Grace and Tom Penderford had a strong marriage, a comfortable home in the Hertfordshire countryside, and a healthy baby girl, but soon after Chloe turns three, tragedy strikes. A disease called Sepsis claims the life of their daughter, devastating their little family. The Penderfords had never heard of Sepsis – a cruel, indiscriminate disease that claims a life somewhere in the world every three and a half seconds. Now, with their world crumbling, they must mend one another’s broken hearts and try to save their marriage if they can. To find out more about this tragic disease, you can visit www.sepsistrust.org. Proceeds from Three and a Half Heartbeats will go straight to the Sepsis Trust.
