There are very few things in this world which are nicer than curling up in a chair with a good book. I have a favourite spot by the window (for the light) and I can stay there for hours as long as I've got a good book. Reading chairs should be comfortable and, in my opinion, you should be able to balance a cup of tea and a plate of biscuits on the arm. Reading is thirsty work, after all.
1. The Bibliochaise by Nobody & Co. In all honesty, this chair is a bit blocky-looking for my taste, but it does hold an impressive number of books. The Italian design company claims, somewhat bafflingly, that the materials used are 'adapted from high performance yacht technologies'. Still, it holds five metres of books and has wheels so that you can move it around without hiring a forklift. Price is available on application.
2. In my dream library (which I will own one day, oh yes), there will be at least one squishy leather armchair. The kind of chair which is comfortable to sit in, ages beautifully and adds a touch of studious sophistication to a room. The Hamilton leather armchair from Sofa Sofa is currently on sale at £449, and is available in several colours including chocolate, forest and claret.
3. The Open Book is another ‘price on application’ chair, but it has won me over by the inclusion of a wee space for a cup of tea. I also like the wall on one side which makes it look like a cosy reading cubicle. Made by design studio Tilt.
4. When I make my fortune, top of my 'new furniture' list will be one of Kelly Swallow's gorgeous patchwork armchairs. This one is a vintage wing back Parker Knoll recliner, reupholstered in a variety of fabrics from Sanderson, Designers Guild and Harlequin. The chair costs £1900 from Kelly Swallow.
5. The Louis armchair is generously-sized (so you can pretend to be a tiny person in a normal-sized chair – fun!) and is uphostered in luxurious red velvet. It costs £980 from Habitat.
