Okay, hands up who used to collect novelty erasers when they were at primary school? Anyone? Back when I was a nipper, you either collected stickers (in a special sticker album, naturally) or novelty erasers. Break times were spent in a happy orgy of counting, admiring, swapping and gloating. I had a fondness for the pastel-shaded, food-shaped, and vanilla-scented varieties that hasn’t, I must admit, entirely gone away… Here are five lovely erasers that will brighten your pencil case (and your day) whatever your age!
1. Iwako gorilla pencil topper in pink. This is described by the shop as 'part of a collectible set of Iwako Japanese erasers' so, clearly, swapping and gloating is still all the rage… This adorable gorilla is also available in orange or green and costs just £0.75 from Blott.
2. As I
remember it, there are few things which make a collectible novelty
eraser more desirable than a plastic accessory or case. This Sushi Bento Box has the cute case, the tiny-food factor and a dose of Japanese kitsch. I know several people (adults and preteens) who would love this, and at £2.20 it's an affordable bit of fun. TofuCute.
3. Four plump-cheeked hamsters sit patiently waiting to attend to your erasing needs. How nice. Cow, elephant, frog and penguin varieties are also available. £3.95 for the set from Tinc.
4. Sticking solidly with this week's retro theme, how about some Space Invader erasers? Available from the Tate online, priced £2.50 for the set of three.
5. I couldn't resist including some scented erasers as part of this round up. Okay, the actual rubbers aren't that exciting (just coloured cubes, really), but the milk carton-style cardboard packaging is super-cute and – bonus – they smell nice! £3.60 gets you a pack of five (milk, chocolate, mixed fruit, grape and strawberry flavours). Available from Fred Aldous.
