If you’re the kind of person who shudders when people crack the spines on books or turn down the corners of pages, you might want to look away now…
Okay, for those who are still reading, here are five fabulous uses for old, unwanted books. Better than sticking them in the paper recycling bin, no?
1.This heart-shaped book safe is made from a vintage hardback and costs around £30 by ConduitPress on Etsy. If you wanted to make this into a padded gift box (for a ring, perhaps?), the designer also makes linen heart pillows to fit inside.
2. Old books turned into confetti. A lovely idea for a bookaphile's wedding. Choose from Science fiction, Mills and
Boon, Christmas, and Jane Austen varieties. £4.50 a pack from The Literary Gift Company.
3. A vintage book made into a sweet little handbag. There
are a few of these around, using both old and new books, so you’re sure to find
one you like. This version (by NovelCreations on Etsy) uses a
leather-bound edition of Pride and Prejudice with a choice of three different
handles (or no handle, if you want it a clutch purse). The price tag (around £30) is very reasonable, but if you fancy making your own
there is an excellent tutorial here.
4. Created by folding the pages of a vintage book, this ‘pop up’ sculpture would
make an unusual anniversary gift. Available in several different
designs (the shop is also willing to discuss custom orders) from
LucianaFrigerio on Etsy. Around £120.
5. Pixel Art Prints uses vintage (1900s) dictionary pages to create distinctive pieces of art. The images are printed using archival quality inks so should last well, and there are loads of pictures to choose from. The prints cost £6.73 each (frame not included) and there is currently an offer to 'buy three, get a fourth print free'.
