Public speaking is the art of speech making. It involves preparing speeches on particular topics and for certain occasions and then delivering them. If you’re a writer, then perhaps you’re wondering why public speaking might be relevant to you. Well, in general, many writers can be quiet people who like to spend time in solitude and just get on with what they love the best – writing. Not all are like this, of course. However, a lot are.
This is great. Having said this, if you’re self-publishing your eBooks and books, then you need to be able to talk up your work and yourself, to help persuade people to buy from you. Public speaking helps a lot in this regards. Read on to find out just how:
Increased self-confidence
When you practice public speaking, you do so usually at public speaking groups in front of an audience. By getting up and speaking like this and doing it again and again, your self-confidence will increase. In turn, you can use this self-confidence for a number of things, such as speaking up generally when around other people, and importantly being able to pitch your books and you to people who might not know much about you.

Increased network
Public speaking is usually done at local groups. People sign up to join and then practice their speaking skills. When you join such a group, there is a huge opportunity to make new friends with new members who will be in a similar boat to you, and with more experienced members who know what it was like to once be a beginner.
Ideas for new stories and novels
When preparing speeches, you will most likely have to do research on the Internet, read books, newspapers and magazines. The more you learn about a topic, the higher the chances of you discovering new ideas for the stories and novels you are currently working on and/or those you plan to write in the future.
Help you to think on your feet
In public speaking, one common type of speech making is impromptu speaking. With this approach, typically one member of a public speaking group will have prepared some topics around a theme (e.g. countries in the world), and then other members will be invited to speak on one of the topics for two to three minutes with hardly any time to prepare!
Although, this may sound daunting, it can help you to learn how to think on your feet, which is a wonderful skill to have when you’re out networking and marketing your eBooks and books.
Increase your ability to persuade and influence
If you’re running your own publishing business, then you will need to be able to influence and persuade. This could include negotiating partnerships with retail partners and publishing companies, or terms and conditions when working with suppliers such as editors, proof readers, and graphic designers.
When you do public speaking, you have an opportunity to influence and persuade your audience to adopt your perspective, or to buy from you, or to make a donation, and you can do this through the way you deliver your speech, your voice, body language, tonality, pitch, facial expressions and the words you use. This skill can be directly transferrable to your own eBook and/or book business.
