Bedrooms reflect your personality – they are your opportunity to show the world who you are. Now if you’re anything like me, you’ll want to adorn your room with literature-inspired decor to display some of your favourite books. It is quite easy to change up your room and introduce items that represent your beloved novels. I’ve chosen five popular books that everybody loves, just to show you how you can integrate these themes into your own room.
1. The Fault in Our Stars by John Green
– Invest in some bright blue bedding, whether this is your duvet cover, a blanket or cushions. The blue represents the book and is the centre of the theme. If you use it as your bedding, it acts as the foundation for the rest of the room. If you want to go all out, you can even purchase cushion covers with quotes from the book just to demonstrate your favourite lines. My personal favourite is “Okay? Okay”. This quote is probably the most popular from the book and is now being printed on everything from mason jars to shoes. You can even buy the slippers and place them at the foot of your bed.
– Paint clouds onto a feature wall from the cover of the book. You can paint the background blue, or keep your current colour depending on how much of the theme you want to integrate. The clouds are easy to paint; you can do them free-handed or just purchase stencils. Whatever works for you.
2. The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins
– Have a mockingjay on the wall. If you’re talented enough to paint it, that’s great, but alternatively just buy a poster and use that to hang on a feature wall.
– Go for anything forest-related. Surround your room with lots of plants to represent the woods. You can even have random leaves scattered around. My personal favourite is having a forest mural on the wall. You can even have a bow and arrow on display, just like the one that Katniss has. Instead, you could go with the penthouse decor that Katniss stayed in, where she had a blue fur blanket and hanging roost fish lamps.
3. Lord of the Rings by J. R. R. Tolkien
– Have a map of Middle Earth on your wall. What is a Lord of the Rings room without a map of Middle Earth? It is the essence of the story and there are a variety of ways that you can incorporate this into your room. Paint it onto your wall, or simply buy a poster. Any devoted fan will immediately recognise it and it is a change from having a generic world map.
– Incorporate Elvish somewhere in the room. It would look amazing just above your bed, or you can simply have the Elvish ring hanging on a chain somewhere. Wall clocks are also a popular choice, and you can even go for a picture of Frodo on the wall.
4. Harry Potter by J. K. Rowling
– Choose your favourite house and hang up a flag (mine is Gryffindor). Alternatively you can buy a scarf in your preferred house colours and drape that over your headboard.
– Invest in a bird cage. If you want to keep the room remaining slightly more feminine, you can invest in a bird cage, which will represent the one that Harry had for his snow owl, Hedwig. This will not only make the room look more shabby chic, but is a more subtle way of incorporating the theme into the room. You can use this for storage, or leave it empty.
5. Pirates of the Caribbean by Ted Elliott and Terry Rossio
– Add anything nautical. Pirate flags and wooden artefacts are the easiest way to go about doing this. However you can even paint a pirate ship onto your wall or add skulls everywhere.
– Purchase a treasure chest which you can use at the foot of your bed as a trunk. It not only looks very unique but adds a whole new edge to your room. If you can’t find one, buy a normal wooden trunk and customise it. It needs to look very worn, but otherwise you can go to town! If you want to keep it feminine, try adding lots of rhinestones.
Other things that you can do for these themes are:
– Display hardback versions of the books on your shelves.
– Hang posters for the books or films.
– Surround your entire room with paraphernalia.
– Purchase printed candle holders.
Whether you choose to go all out and immerse yourself in the theme, or simply choose a few items, your room is going to reflect you!
