1. Be disciplined. Keep a diary, schedule your writing time and stick to it. This means planning ahead, and sometimes saying ‘no’ to coffees, lunches, or evenings out with friends.
2. Incubate yourself. Turn off Twitter, Facebook and all other online distractions. Then step into your imagination and the world you’ve created. Can you hear it, smell it, see it?
3. Be true to yourself and write from the heart. Be brave: Allow your voice to come through and tell your story.
4. Read your work out loud. Listen to the rhythm of your prose; is there a mix of short and long sentences? Is your dialogue real? If your dialogue doesn’t sound authentic to you, it certainly won’t to any readers.
5. When the words don’t come, step away; go for a walk, read some poetry, listen to some music, or dip into a great writer. Inspiration will return and you’ll be able to see your work with fresh eyes. The Last Summer is out now and The Snow Globe is out in the US soon.
