Judith Kinghorn’s Top 5 Writing Tips

By Novelicious

Judith Kinghorn 1. Be disciplined. Keep a diary, schedule your writing time and stick to it. This means planning ahead, and sometimes saying โ€˜noโ€™ to coffees, lunches, or evenings out with friends.

2. Incubate yourself. Turn off Twitter, Facebook and all other online distractions. Then step into your imagination and the world youโ€™ve created. Can you hear it, smell it, see it?

3. Be true to yourself and write from the heart. Be brave: Allow your voice to come through and tell your story.

4. Read your work out loud. Listen to the rhythm of your prose; is there a mix of short and long sentences? Is your dialogue real? If your dialogue doesnโ€™t sound authentic to you, it certainly wonโ€™t to any readers.

5. When the words donโ€™t come, step away; go for a walk, read some poetry, listen to some music, or dip into a great writer. Inspiration will return and youโ€™ll be able to see your work with fresh eyes. The Last Summerย is out now and The Snow Globe is out in the US soon.
