REVIEWED BY DEBS CARR
Samantha Leiffer teaches primary school by day, and has a part-time job working in a theatre. She has a lot going on. There’s the rocky relationship with her detective boyfriend, John Krull, a strong, quiet man who ended up being shot in the neck when Samantha was involved a murder only the year before. She also has an emotionally distant, but famous mother who seems to be intent on moving back to New York City, and has for some reason not thought to mention this small matter to her only child.
Samantha’s life is busy, and it’s about to get a lot busier and more unsettling when she’s handed a message by a stranger. The message is a warning and when people start dying, Samantha knows they’re somehow linked to her. John keeps going missing and is acting secretive and Samantha keeps finding more messages, each one more frightening than the last. She is beginning to wonder who she can trust. Who is this stranger who keeps trying to warn her and who is the person he’s trying so hard to warn her about?
Her ex-boyfriend, an actor who is in therapy for his sex addiction, turns up wanting to make amends for treating her so badly when they were together. He has a secret he needs to tell Samantha, and when his girlfriend, who happens to be the actress mother of one of Samantha’s pupils, starts to get jealous, things go from bad to worse. John isn’t impressed to see Samantha’s ex-boyfriend back on the scene and he’s also getting a little tired of his partner’s apparent interest in her. As the tension increases between them and their relationship deteriorates, people start being murdered and although Samantha knows they have something to do with her, she has no idea what.
This is a fast-paced book and the relationship between Sarah and John sizzles all the way through. I couldn’t wait to find out the identity of the killer and wasn’t disappointed at the end to discover not only who it was and the connection with Samantha, but also the motive behind the killings.
A great read 8/10
