Dear Jo,
Thank you so much for lifting yourself up off the floor and writing the Harry Potter series. I don’t always think people really understand how flattening depression is, and poverty and being a single parent, and everything else you had thrown your way.
I read your first three books when I was pregnant with my son, and was immediately swept away into the world of magic. What is astonishing to me about your work, is your imagination and the quiet subtlety of your research. It’s obvious you love words, and names and myths but you bring them to the reader in such a light way, it’s almost like a gossamer spell.
And then I read The Casual Vacancy. Wow. The last 100 pages of that book are the most powerful I have ever read of any book. I wept for a night. To make someone believe in magic and weep for characters, all from the ordering of words, is a true gift.Thank you.
Yours truly,
Kate Forster
