Time for your Monday morning writing prompt. Dive in, have a read and continue the story in your own words.
It comes to you suddenly, 25 years later, with no warning. How could you have forgotten, you wonder? And what could possibly have prompted you to remember as you stood washing dishes at the kitchen sink and staring out into the darkness on a nondescript Thursday evening? Memories are funny like that, you suppose.
For your twelfth birthday you spent a weekend in the Norfolk Broads. In your mind’s eye, you can see your parents in that slightly shabby but cosy rented cottage. Your dad reading the newspaper in a deck chair with his trousers rolled up. You mum – never able to truly relax – potting around the kitchen with cake tins and jugs of homemade lemonade.
You’ve always remembered those things, of course. They were amongst your favourite childhood memories. What you had forgotten, however, was taking a little wooden fishing boat out to that strange and mossy oblong island. It wasn’t visible from the water’s edge, but you’d eyed it numerous times on your crabbing adventures. There it sat, undisturbed, eerie and a little bit magical amongst the flatlands, practically begging to be explored. And that day, you did explore.
How could you ever have forgotten what you’d seen there?Write what you remember about visiting the island, including what you saw.
