The painting was an impulse buy – purchased more out of desperation than desire. The Saturday morning auction had whizzed by, each catalogue item earmarked as a possible piece for Claire’s new home snapped up by frenzied bidders with more than four times her budget. But she was determined. A first time buyer – flushed and slightly sweaty – there was no way she was going home empty handed. Not when she’d watched at least 15 hours of Cash in the Attic in preparation, and driven 90 minutes to boot.
When the auctioneer announced the oil painting to little interest from the crowd, it was like fate. It wasn’t really Claire’s style, truth be known, but for a mere £40 and the added buzz of a winning bid, you couldn’t go wrong. The painting would fill the space on her new staircase nicely, she thought, and it did.
Cleaned, positioned and hung, Claire passed the young woman in pink on her way down to the kitchen first thing every morning for several months. She became quite the fixture – admired by many guests – and Claire often wondered about her story.
One day, however, while pondering who the model might have been as she walked down to breakfast, Claire noticed something different about the painting’s eyes. They appeared to be looking in a different direction than usual …
