My Writing Room by Laura Ziepe
My original plan was to write in my office, and when I first moved in my house, that’s what I did. I decorated it in a shabby chic style and it’s really pretty to look at, but unfortunately it’s far too cold as it used to be a garage. It doesn’t matter how many layers I put on or if the heating is turned up full blast, I freeze in there, so after a few weeks, I resigned to the fact that I needed a new place. I find that I do most of my writing in my kitchen, sitting at the table as it’s the brightest room in the house. I’m less distracted than if I sit in the lounge (though I must admit, I do love to laze with my laptop in my reclining armchair).
There are two problems with writing in the kitchen though. Firstly, I’m more likely to keep eating (my fridge is right in front of me and I know the chocolate bars in the cupboard are oh so close) and secondly, I have two Chihuahuas. Anyone that owns a Chihuahua will know that they are lap-dogs. I think when I first bought them two years ago I didn’t really understand that this actually meant they want to sit on your lap ALL the time.
This is not a joke, Chihuahuas are actually little stalkers. As soon as I sit at the table ready to write they are jumping up at my legs or looking at me with their sad puppy dog eyes, begging me to pick them up. So everyday I’m covered in dog hair. They’re great company though, so I don’t really mind. I have one very small one (Dolly) and one rather large one (Dusty). So Dolly usually sits on my lap and Dusty rests his head on my leg. I’m constantly shifting around using the other chairs to put my legs up but at least they’re comfortable…
