Compiled by Gillian McAllister Well, let me tell you, there are a whole host of BRILLIANT books coming out this month. So, happy new year to us. Let’s enjoy the days where it never seems to truly get light, Blue Monday and the very beginning of 2017, with the freshest new fiction around. The Trophy Child – Paula Daly I have been pretty open about my need for a proof of this wonderful book. Paula Daly sits right between women’s fiction and thrillers and her fourth novel is no exception. An exploration of the darkest side of pushy parenting, it follows Bronte and her mother Karen and their quest for perfection. My Sweet Revenge – Jane Fallon A woman finds out her husband is cheating on her, but instead of confronting him, she seeks revenge, in the most compelling, emotional, and manipulative way possible… Hold Back the Stars – Katie Khan One Day meets Gravity. Was there ever a more perfect pitch? A star-crossed couple have 90 minutes of air left as they fall through space. If they make it, what will be waiting for them back on earth? Good Me, Back Me – Ali Land The daughter of a serial killer tries to start a new life. A disturbing and evocative exploration of identity, goodness and, of course, badness. Defender – G X Todd A post-apocalyptic world where the destruction has come from within, in the form of voices inciting violent acts, inside the general public’s minds. Pilgrim, a misanthropic wanderer, meets Lacey, and together they try to travel to safety. Meet me at Beachcomber Bay – Jill Mansell The queen of women’s fiction is back, this time with a Cornish setting where three love stories are entwined and secrets are revealed. The House of New Beginnings – Lucy Diamond Three tenants’ stories in a house on the Brighton sea front come together in a moving and uplifting novel about fresh starts. White Lies and Wishes – Cathy Bramley Three women meet on winter’s day and decide to make their dreams come true by September. Covering love, career advancement and body issues, this is a feel-good rom com. 4 3 2 1 – Paul Auster Four parallel lives split out in this Sliding Doors-style narrative about family, friendship, love, childhood and twentieth-century America. A tour de force. Behind Her Eyes – Sarah Pinborough This novel has its own hashtag – #WTFThatEnding – and rightly so. Don’t trust this book. Don’t trust these people. Don’t trust yourself.
