If there’s one thing we do well in Britain, it’s book festivals. With hundreds taking place throughout the UK every year, there have been literary events dedicated to just about every genre, from crime, horror and sci-fi to romance and children’s books. But there has never been a festival entirely devoted to chick lit. Until now.
Laura Bambrey, a book blogger and events planner from Devon, has started a fundraising campaign via Kickstarter, with the intention of launching the UK’s very first Chick Lit Love Fest in April 2014. Hosted in Devon at the Dartington Hall Estate, the one day event will offer chick lit fans the chance to come together for talks, panel discussions and book signings.
‘I've been blogging and reviewing chick lit for almost five years and reading it for far longer, but for me, the most exciting thing has been meeting authors and hearing them talk about their work first hand,’ says Laura. ‘The genre's heroines are funny, sassy and inspiring, but they are nothing compared to their creators. I wanted to create an event that offers all chick lit fans the chance to meet their favourite authors and hear them talk about their work.’
Authors Talli Roland, Alexandra Potter and Carole Matthews will all be part of the lineup with more guests to be announced. In the meantime, Laura is working hard to secure funding for the festival. Backers can donate as little as £5 via the crowdfunding website Kickstarter, where incentives range from Chick Lit Love Fest tote bags to a VIP breakfast with the festival’s authors.
Laura concludes: ‘Chick lit is hugely popular and there are loads of us die-hard fans out there. While there are many great literary festivals and book events in Britain, there's nothing devoted entirely to chick lit. The genre is huge, vastly popular and here to stay – it's time it got an event of its own!’To read more about Chick Lit Love Fest or to donate, you can visit the campaign on Kickstarter.
