1. Fernwood Publishing
Fernwood Publishing, a book publishing company based in Black Point, Nova Scotia with a second office in Winnipeg, Manitoba, was founded by Errol Sharpe in August 1991 although they did not release any book officially till the spring of 1992.
This company is known for focusing on different important Canadian perspectives on political subjects that other publishers ignore. It is why they call themselves critical thinkers as their goal remains to buck the trends caused by restructuring capitalism. They aim to publish books that enlighten, challenge and inform their readers.

From young adult romance novels to political non-fiction, they encourage all.
Nevermore Press was founded by Ernie Hadley, a writer with over forty years of experience in this field and is based in Lunenburg, Nova Scotia.
They particularly love to receive submissions from new and unpublished writers with a particular focus on publishing works that give insights into what it’s like to be an Atlantic Canadian.

3. Nimbus Publishing
You have probably heard of this company, as they are the biggest and the most popular Canadian-English publishing company east of Toronto. It was founded by John Marshall in 1978 who decided to sell the company in 2012. So, it is now owned by previous employees Heather Bryan and Terrilee Bulger.
The company publishes an average of forty books per year, and these books are focused on the Atlantic province only. They publish cultural history, cultural and social history, sports, current events, biography, nature photography, fiction and children’s books.

4. Formac Publishing
Formac Publishing, as they would tell you, is not the largest or biggest publishing company but they have published well over a thousand innovative, most challenging and tech-savvy books and counting.
The president, James Lorimer confirms that while they are focused on Canada’s rich maritime history like the Halifax Explosion and Oak Island, their books are not exclusively based on that as they also have some bestsellers such as James Cook’s biography by Jerry Lockett, an award-winning a book on the British explorer captain.
Additionally, they publish various children’s books right from the age of six upwards.
They also accept submissions from writers across the nation and internationally. They accept entries and should give a response after careful considerations by their team in four to six weeks.
5. New World Publishing
New World Publishing was founded in 1955 with the prime objective to create books that will make a lifelong difference for their reader’s or audience.
If you are environmentally friendly, then this publishing house is what you have been searching for, as they only ever make use of recycled waste material for their book production.
They have a relatively restricted genre of books that they produce which include self-esteem, health and wellness, safety (international or national publications), and artistic publications about the Atlantic provinces of Canada. They also, on occasion accept historical memoirs.
That said, it is evident that most of their publications are non-fiction, but in a bid to move the company forward they have some regional books and memoirs to their name.

6. Cape Breton University Press
This press was founded with the College of Cape Breton in 1974. However, their focus has never been just to publish scholarly texts. Since its inception, they have published a vast variety of books both fiction and non-fiction including children’s books and young adult books that have won awards.
After over 40 years in the business of publishing books about Cape Breton and academic works for a general audience, Cape Breton University Press is no longer accepting new submissions.
