November’s Literary Adaptations

Catching fire posterThis month, there is a lot of truth in the adaptations and a fair amount of reality TV. Just don't push the girl with telekinetic powers too far.

Fri 1st

Philomena is the heartbreaking true story of a woman searching for her son after nuns removed the child from her because he was conceived out of wedlock. The film stars Judi Dench and Steve Coogan as the reporter following her story. Sure to break your heart.

Thur 21st

The second in The Hunger Games series, written by Suzanne Collins, arrives this month in the form of The Hunger Games: Catching Fire. Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson and Liam Hemsworth are all back and this time the horrors are just getting worse. This book managed to surpass the original novel for me and the film more than lives up to its source material. Powerful and emotional and well worth a watch!

Fri 29th

The infamous Stephen King novel Carrie, about a teenage girl who deals with her bullies by getting in touch with her powers, is remade yet again with Chloë Grace Moretz in the titular role. Her mother is played, hauntingly, by Julianne Moore. The film holds up surprisingly well against the other manifestations. It's terrifying, it's beautiful. It's brilliant.

Also about this month is the spectacular 3D epic Gravity, which sees Sandra Bullock and George Clooney floating about in space. Saving Mr Banks, meanwhile, sees Emma Thompson and Tom Hanks play against each other in the story of how Mary Poppins was adapted into the much-loved film. There are lots of Doctor Who treats to celebrate the show's fiftieth anniversary too.

What are you looking forward to seeing this month?
