Eve Dallas is a lieutenant in 2048’s New York Police Department. Her latest case is a disturbing one as a bar full of customers have turned on one another, savagely attacking each other with any weapon to hand; broken glass, chairs, their bare hands. The attack lasted minutes but resulted in over 80 deaths. Eve must find out what made them behave in such a frenzied manner and who is responsible for administering it before they strike again.
Delusion In Death is 35th book in the ‘In Death’ series but the first that I have read. Despite this, I didn’t encounter too many problems and managed to keep up. There were a couple of details I wasn’t too sure about but nothing major that would impede the enjoyment of the book.
Eve is quite a hard character, which is understandable due to her past. She’s an extremely focused police officer who is determined to catch those responsible for the mass murder, but I’m sure if we got the chance to see more of her, we’d see more of the slightly softer side that she occasionally displays with husband, Roarke. She’s a serious character but she also has a sense of humour too, which shows through the dialogue between herself and Roarke and her colleagues, particularly Peabody.
Although there is a lot going on within the investigation, I found the majority of the book quite slow and felt my reading was very sluggish. The plot was an interesting one, but it didn’t really grip me for the first two thirds of the book. However, the last part of the book really grabbed me and I ended up reading the final 200 pages in one day.
