I wouldn’t have ever read ‘Filthy Rich’ by Wendy Holden if it were not for the fact that it was given to me as a gift and I was in the middle of Greece with a serious book drought. Normally I’m irritated by Wendy Holden’s celebrity satires and pun filled titles, and ‘Filthy Rich’ conjured up images of much the same kind of book.
In the end I was very pleasantly surprised. This novel is quite a departure from Holden’s previous offerings, with only one celeb parody in the shape of a pink-tastic footballers girlfriend hunting for a new mansion. The novel centres around the charming English village of Allsop and it’s various inhabitants. Mary – a shy romantic – is lonely when her husband leaves to become a polar explorer. Alexandra – an Uber WAG – is looking for a stately pile as well as a marriage proposal. American Beth is new to Allsop and trying hard to make a good impression on the village community, and the brilliantly named Morag Archbutt-Pesk is a power hungry eco-warrior determined to mess it up for all of them.

The characters come together when each of them puts their name forward for a plot on the new village allotments, where inevitably they get much more than just a patch of fertile soil. In-between all the digging, friendships are made, romance burgeons, battles ensue and each of the characters find their lives changing in ways they never would have thought possible. Filthy Rich is a warm-hearted novel and I especially enjoyed the touching scenes involving Sam a local tearaway and the laughs provided by the character of Morag and her dippy husband. This book won’t set your world alight with twisting plots and intrigue, but it will provide a comfortable, relaxing read with interesting characters, solid writing and more than a few chuckles.
