Sadie is a 40-something single mother who writes erotic fiction for a living. After her husband Roger leaves her for a man (and many more thereafter), she sticks to what she knows best – being a mother and a writer. Every Friday, Sadie meets up for no strings attached sex with Jason, a lovely and kind lawyer she meets via a personal ad. Whilst everything seems to be moving along nicely, Sadie suddenly has the shock of her life when she bumps into the main character (an attractive and charismatic man called Aiden) from her latest book whilst she is out shopping.
Sadie knows she has to help him. She takes him home with her and, when they find his true love Lily, they begin to work out that there is a magical force behind the many strange events that are occurring. Jason joins Sadie in the quest to solve the mystical spell cast by a scorned witch called Clarissa. Will Sadie ever work out the magic spell or will Aidan and Lily disappear forever?
I had my reservations when I began reading this book. It started with an excerpt from Sadie’s erotic fiction, which made me question whether the whole book would follow suit. However, it shortly moved on to Sadie’s perspective, which lifted the tone of the book and I really started to get into the story. Sadie’s character is great and I found myself relating to her on a lot of levels. She kept the tone of the whole book very light even though some characters were facing certain death!
I loved the build-up of Sadie and Jason’s relationship from once a week ‘quickies’ to an actual relationship. It was all very sweet and I was willing them to be together in the end. Sadie’s daughter wasn’t in the story very much, and I don’t think it mattered or affected the book in a negative way. Normally I want more from the immediate family characters but, with this story, there was no need for her to be involved with the dangerous and mysterious Clarissa.I really enjoyed the humour within the novel, and the ending was perfect for Sadie. I didn’t feel the need for anything more from the book once I had finished reading it – I was fulfilled. I think this book would be enjoyed by fans of Bridget Jones, since it has similar comedy elements and a lot about being a ‘normal’ woman.
A very enjoyable and funny read. Highly recommended.
